Salaries in Belgium
The Belgian employment market is complex and has specific holiday entitlements and taxation. Employees in Belgium receive 10 National holidays:
- New Year's Day (1 January)
- Easter Monday
- Labour Day (1 May)
- Ascension Day
- Whit Monday
- Belgian National Holiday (21 July)
- Assumption Day (15 August)
- All Saints' Day (1 November)
- Armistice Day (11 November)
- Christmas Day (25 December)
Holiday pay is also paid by employers depending on the employment contract. Office employees usually receive 1/12 of 92% of the gross salary for the month the holiday commences multiplied by the number of months worked in your last calendar year.
Tax is deducted at source by employers (bedrijfsvoorheffing) for employees in paid employment. Full details can be found in our Working Abroad section under Belgium.
Salaries in Belgium are relatively high to cover the 13.07% employee social security tax and income tax rates of 25-50%. The tax threshold for salaries in Belgium is lower than in other countries and employees in professional and office roles will pay 40-50% income tax.
